Ponsse launches electric forest machine

Ponsse and Epec present a new technology concept for an electric forest machine that has been developed in Turku for three years. Ponsse’s technology concept is a glimpse into the future, showing the way forward for technological development and solutions for responsible logging.

The new Ponsse EV1 concept has been developed for the most common size of Ponsse tractor, the 15-tonne load capacity load tractor. The concept machine features a fully electric power line and Epec power distribution unit and power line control unit. The machine’s driveline is powered solely by energy from batteries. The batteries are charged by a Range Extender, which at this stage of development is internal combustion engine driven. Testing and development work is progressing steadily.

Ponsse has been researching and developing new technology solutions for many years. The Ponsse EV1 technology concept was launched in 2019, when Ponsse and Epec started to jointly explore responsible and sustainable power solutions.

“Technology is evolving at a rapid pace and this provides huge opportunities to further develop our solutions, even in unexpected directions. Together with our technology company Epec, we have worked tremendously hard to make this concept possible. At the same time, the capabilities of both companies have developed very nicely during this project and we have learned a lot of new things,” says Juho Nummela, CEO of Ponsse.

Ponsse aims to be a pioneer in forest machine technology, striving for carbon neutrality in its operations and solutions.
