KERPUR -Ceramic demolition waste in circular economy (React EAKR)

Funding: ERDF / REACT-EU. Funded as a part of the European Union’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic. The total budget is EUR 686 810, of which 80% is ERDF funding, ie. EUR 549 448. Turku Science Park Ltd.’s share is EUR 207 582.

Recycling and reuse of ceramic waste is a way forward into a circular economy. KERPUR-project explores new, more efficient ways to sort, recycle and reuse ceramic demolition waste. Usually, a large quantity of the heterogenous demolition waste ends up in landfills. However, ceramic materials are highly processed compounds that could find new recycling applications. As traditional ceramics used in construction consists of compounds produced in high temperature reactions, these energy-intensive materials are feasible as secondary raw materials to several products.

Work packages:

  1. Identification of new uses of the ceramic waste and the quality requirements for those.
  2. Piloting new uses of the ceramic waste together with selected companies
  3. Carbon footprint of the pilot cases
  4. Conceptualization of a digital platform for the re-use of ceramic waste and evaluation of the value it brings in the value-chain.
  5. New business models
  6. Communication and information of the findings to target groups and internal communication between project partners.

Duties of Turku Science Park Ltd.: Co-ordination of the project and responsibility for work-packages 4-6.
