Hackathon challenge opened to find better ways of utilizing the city’s open data

  • The challenge competition will increase the conditions for companies and citizens to utilize the data produced by the city
  • The solutions are expected to be smoothly usable
  • A total of EUR 15,000 in cash prizes will be awarded to the three best

The City of Turku is opening up more regional data on the web. Ideas on what information to present and how to present it will be the key focus of the city’s hackathon challenge, which starts on August 26th at the SHIFT business festival’s virtual kick-off.

The challenge, published at the English-language event, goes by the name of Turku Citizen Dashboard Hackathon Challenge. The challenge is done in part with the city’s Smart and Wise Turku -project, which focuses on creating more usable open data for the city’s businesses and inhabitants, says Tapio Järvenpää, project leader for Smart And Wise Turku

-We’re challenging our citizens and different teams to innovate a new service for utilizing open data, so that it would hold the information that our citizens, businesses and other entities consider most valuable. The information needs to be easily accessible, so we hope to see ideas on how the information should be presented, as well. We’re also thinking about what to call the new service, so name suggestions are welcome too, says project manager Anna-Kaisa Berisha, who took part in the hackathon’s preparations.

Top three will be rewarded

Taking part in the challenge happens by signing up online. The pitch itself must be presented by a 2 to 5 minutes long video, due September 27th. More information on pitching will be given to all participants after registration.

The judges will choose between 3 and 6 of the best entries to advance to the next round. In this round, citizens will be able to vote for their favorite entry through the Kerro kantasi -service between October 5th and October 25th.

The final three best pitches will be rewarded at the SHIFT business festival main event on October 27th. The first prize is 10 000€, the second prize is 4000€, and the third prize is 1000€. Additionally, the three winning proposals for the service will be displayed at the SHIFT business festival on the following day, October 28th, at the City of Turku’s virtual stand.

-We hope that the challenge will also result in new ideas on how to piece together different kinds of data to create useful collections of information. Possibly something that we haven’t even thought of needing before, say experts Katri Honkonen and Arvi Leino, who also took part in the Hackathon challenge’s preparations.

Turun kaupunki on avaamassa lisää alueellista tietoa verkkoon.

– Haaste toteutetaan osana kaupungin Smart and Wise Turku -kärkihanketta, jonka yksi keskeisistä tavoitteista on luoda kaupunkilaisille ja yrityksille lisäedellytyksiä hyödyntää erilaista kaupungin tuottamaa dataa, sanoo Smart and Wise Turun hankejohtaja Tapio Järvenpää.

Kolme parasta palkitaan

Haasteeseen osallistutaan ilmoittautumalla mukaan verkkolomakkeen kautta. Oman idean pitchaus tehdään 2–5 minuutin pituisella videolla, josta annetaan lisäohjeet kaikille ilmoittautuneille. Videot on toimitettava 27. syyskuuta mennessä.

Tuomaristo valitsee osallistujien joukosta jatkoon 3–6 parhaaksi arvioimaansa työtä. Niistä yleisö saa äänestää lopulliset voittajat Kerro kantasi -palvelussa 5.–25.10.

Kolme parasta pitchausta palkitaan SHIFT-festivaalin päätapahtumassa 27. lokakuuta.
