Breakfast coffee with a professor / Digital transformation of industry

Introduction to webinar series

The goal of this series of seminars is to generate active dialogue between the local businesses and the University of Turku’s programme in Mechanical and Materials Engineering. You’re welcome to hear about the favourite subjects of new professors and discuss the topics that are of interest to your company.

The events will be held on Fridays from 8.30–9.30 a.m. Each seminar starts with a 20–30-minute keynote address on the subject. We hope that the companies will actively take part in the discussion!

Wallace Moreira Bessa: Intelligent control of mechatronic systems

Wallace Moreira Bessa is Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Turku. The main directions of his current research are related to the intelligent control of mechatronic systems and autonomous robots. Before taking up his position this year at the University of Turku, he was Assistant Professor at the Federal Center for Technological Education (Brazil) and Associate Professor at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (Brazil). In 2014, he was awarded the prestigious Humboldt Research Fellowship for Experienced Researchers, which allowed him to be a visiting professor at the Hamburg University of Technology (Germany) from August 2015 to July 2017. He has more than 100 scientific publications on topics such as intelligent control, non-linear systems, robotics and mechatronics.

Ashish Ganvir: Additive Manufacturing and Surface Engineering

Ashish’s expertise lies in material science and process engineering where he tries to answer ´how various processing conditions influence the material microstructure, properties and hence the performance´. Before joining University of Turku, Ashish worked at GKN Aerospace Sweden AB as a process engineer, additive manufacturing (AM). Ashish has a PhD in production technology, from University West, Sweden. Ashish has ambition to do research in the field of AM or 3D printing and surface engineering using laser, electron and plasma-based technologies. AM of metals, ceramics and their composites are of specific interest. Similarly, development of functional surfaces by depositing ceramic, metallic and composite coatings for various applications such as bio, energy, tribology, corrosion, semiconductor etc. are also of focus.

Konstantinos Daskalakis: Engineering novel light-emitting devices by controlling light-matter interactions

My research focuses on the multidisciplinary fields of photonics, plasmonics and organic electronics. I am particularly interested in understanding and engineering the interactions between light and matter in novel light-emitting devices such as OLEDs and organic LASERs. In other words, by gaining access to the microscopic world I make matter and light “dance” harmonically for improving the efficiency of environmentally friendly solid-state lighting devices. My work is mostly done in laboratories (experimental) and involves fabrication and processing of multilayer thin-film devices, spectroscopy and electrical characterization.

Principles of Axiomatic Design and their Application
Jussi Kantola, Professor of Mechanical Engineering
Place: University of Turku, Agora, lecture room XXII / Virtual

Axiomatic design theory was published almost 20 years ago. The theory is based on two principles that need to be taken into account when new products, manufacturing, services etc. are planned or existing ones are updated. The seminar presents the axiomatic design theory, and there will be discussion on how the theory should be applied in companies. Experiences have shown that the matter is not very familiar in companies, although it is one of the most important theories of mechanical engineering.

Jussi Kantola is Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the University of Turku. Jussi came to Turku from the University of Vaasa where he worked as Professor of Industrial Management and especially Product Development. Previously Jussi has worked as Associate Professor at KAIST, Korea where he was one of the two founders of the first information service technology department in the world. From 2003–2008 Jussi worked in various research roles in the Tampere University of Technology and the University of Turku. Jussi has completed PhDs in the University of Louisville, US (1998) and Tampere University of Technology (2006). Jussi’s research areas include product and service design, human-machine integration, and fuzzy systems.

Additive Manufacturing (3D printing)
Antti Salminen, Professor of Mechanical Engineering

Antti’s expertise lies in laser-based processes, welding technology, and additive manufacturing. Additive manufacturing and 3D printing are the latest manufacturing technologies to be adopted in industrial use. Their use is expanding at considerable speed, and new applications are continuously being discovered for them. Industrial approval for these products already exists in demanding power plant and medical applications, but the transition is also taking place in regular engineering workshops. In his keynote address Antti discusses the state of this technology, requirements for its introduction, as well as applications and problems.

Solar Energy Systems and Materials
Kati Miettunen, Professor of Materials Engineering

Kati specialises in new solar cell materials and systems. One key object of research is improvement of the sustainability of new solar cell technologies, but also the use of bio-based materials in solar cells with the goal to decrease the repayment time of energy and enable new functionalities. My other research line is the designing of solar cell systems particularly for northern conditions, maximising their financial profitability and potential.
